Explosion-proof lamps and explosion-proof equipment Tools for explosive environments

Personnel responsible for operating equipment and processes in explosive environments should provide all personnel working on site with information and materials on the safe use of hand tools. The following two different types of tools should be distinguished:

(1) Tools that can only cause a single spark when in use (such as screwdrivers, wrenches, impact screwdrivers);

(2) Tools that produce a cluster of sparks during cutting or grinding processes.

In Zone 0 and Zone 20, tools that can cause sparks are not allowed to be used. In Zone 1 and Zone 2, steel tools are only permitted when they meet the requirements of item (1). If it can be ensured that there is no dangerous explosive environment in the workplace, tools that meet the requirements of item (2) are allowed to be used. However, if there is an explosion risk due to the presence of Class II C explosive substances (acetylene, carbon disulfide, hydrogen) and hydrogen sulfide, ethylene oxide and carbon monoxide, no type of steel tools are allowed to be used in Zone 1, unless it can be ensured that there is no dangerous explosive environment in the workplace during the use of these tools.

Steel tools that meet item (1) are permitted in Zone 21 and Zone 22. If the workplace is isolated from other areas of Zone 21 and Zone 22 and the following additional measures have been taken, steel tools that meet item (2) are allowed.

— The accumulated dust has been removed from the workplace; or

— The workplace is kept moist to prevent the dust from dispersing in the air or forming any smoldering points.

When cutting or grinding in Zone 21 or Zone 22 or in the vicinity, sparks can fly a considerable distance and cause smoldering particles to form. Therefore, other areas around the workplace should also be included in the scope of protective measures.

There should be a “work approval” system in place for the use of tools in Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22. These should be included in the usage information.

Note: Specific industrial sectors may have particular requirements or rules regarding the use of tools.
