Questions such as “What zone is explosion-proof lighting in?” are often asked.
Only explosion-proof lights can be used in an explosion-proof area, ordinary lamps and lanterns can not be used in an explosion-proof area. Ordinary lamps are used in places where non-combustible gases and dusts exist.
What is an explosion-proof area, hazardous area?
According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)/European Electrotechnical Commission (ENEC) classification of hazardous areas, as follows:
Zone 0 (Zone 0):
refers to the area where explosive gases are always or for a long period of time present, and where the hazard is greater than 1000 hours/year.
An area where explosive gas mixtures are present continuously or for long periods of time during normal operation.
For example, the interior of storage tanks in some petroleum refineries, where volatile flammable gases are present continuously inside the tanks due to the storage of flammable and explosive oils, is a Zone 0 environment. The possibility of an explosion in this area is extremely high, and the explosion-proof requirements for electrical equipment, etc. are the most stringent.
Zone 1 (Zone 1):
refers to an area where flammable gases may be present during normal operation at a hazard of 10 to 1000 hours/year.
Normal operation refers to the routine operation of equipment within its design parameters.
For example, in the chemical production plant, some of the pipeline interface to transport combustible gases, although the sealing measures, but in the normal operation of the process may still be a small amount of combustible gas leakage, resulting in the formation of explosive gas mixtures, this type of area will be divided into Zone 1. 1 zone of the explosion of the possibility of a relatively high degree of explosion, the explosion-proof performance of the equipment requirements are also very strict.
Zone 2 (Zone 2):
refers to the absence of flammable gases under normal conditions, even if occasional, the existence of a very short period of time, the accident state of the risk of 0.1 to 10 hours / year.
In some well-ventilated industrial plants, although there is a small amount of equipment that may leak flammable gases, but the ventilation system can dilute the leaked gases and exhaust them in time, making it unlikely that explosive gas mixtures will exist for a long period of time, and this kind of area is classified as Zone 2. Compared to zones 0 and 1, zone 2 has a lower likelihood of explosion, but still requires appropriate explosion protection measures.
For dust environments, ATEX has a similar classification:
Zone 20:
Places and the interiors of containers where combustible dust occurs continuously or frequently enough to form combustible dust-air mixtures and/or where an uncontrolled and extremely thick layer of dust is likely to be formed in the course of normal operation.
For example, the milling plant of certain flour mills, where large quantities of flour dust are generated during the production process with high and persistent concentrations of dust, would fall within Zone 20.
Zone 21:
Locations where dust may be present in quantities sufficient to form a combustible dust-air mixture during normal operation, but which are not classified as Zone 20.
Usually includes areas adjacent to dust emission sources (e.g., hoppers, containers, etc.), where there may be intermittent dust leakage, resulting in the formation of combustible dust and air mixtures in localized areas, such as some of the material handling areas may fall into Zone 21.
Zone 22:
Places where combustible dust occurs occasionally and only for short periods of time under unusual conditions, or where combustible dust occasionally accumulates or may be layered and generates an airborne mixture of combustible dust.
For example, in some dust-producing but well-ventilated and well-managed workshops, a small amount of dust accumulation may occur only under abnormal conditions such as equipment failure, and such areas are classified as Zone 22.
