Analysis of Explosion Proof Lights labels
The label/nameplate of explosion proof lighting fixtures must display corresponding explosion-proof markings. According to the GB 3836 standard, the markings primarily include: Explosion-Proof Type + Gas Group + Temperature Class + Equipment Protection Level (EPL). The gas and temperature classifications were detailed in our previous article: [YI Share | A Comprehensive Guide to Explosion-Proof Lighting Applications and Zoning].
01 Explosion-Proof Types
| Flameproof Type (d)
- Symbol: d
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: GB 3836.2
- Principle: Components that may generate sparks or arcs during normal operation are enclosed in a flameproof housing. The housing withstands internal explosions without damage and prevents flames or heat from igniting external explosive gases by cooling them through flameproof joints.
| Increased Safety Type (e)
- Symbol: e
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Enhanced structural safety for equipment that does not produce sparks, arcs, or excessive heat during normal operation.
| Intrinsic Safety Type (i)
- Symbol: i
- Applicable Zones: Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Circuits are designed to limit energy, ensuring sparks or thermal effects cannot ignite explosive gases, even during faults.
| Pressurized Type (p)
- Symbol: p
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Maintains internal gas pressure above ambient levels to prevent explosive gas ingress or dilutes gas concentration below explosive limits.
| Oil-Immersed Type (o)
- Symbol: o
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Submerges components in oil to isolate them from explosive atmospheres.
| Sand-Filled Type (q)
- Symbol: q
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Conductive parts are embedded in sand to prevent ignition.
| Non-Sparking Type (n)
- Symbol: n
- Applicable Zones: Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Prevents ignition under normal or specified abnormal conditions.
| Encapsulated Type (m)
- Symbol: m
- Applicable Zones: Zone 1, Zone 2
- Standard: EN 60079
- Principle: Potentially ignitable components are sealed in resin to block contact with explosive gases.
02 Gas Groups
(Refer to previous article for detailed classifications of explosive gases and vapors.)

03 Temperature Classes

(Refer to previous article for temperature limits and ignition thresholds.)
04 Equipment Protection Level (EPL)
- Gb: High protection level for Zone 1/2, ensuring safety during frequent faults or rare malfunctions.
- Gc: Enhanced protection for Zone 2, suitable for non-hazardous or rarely hazardous conditions.

Case Study: Amasly Explosion Proof Lights Labels
Amasly Explosion-Proof Light (BAD Series): Marking Ex d IIC T4 Gb
- Ex: Explosion-proof certification.
- d: Flameproof Type (d).
- II: Equipment for non-mining explosive gas environments.
- C: Suitable for gas groups IIA, IIB, IIC.
- T4: Max surface temperature ≤135°C.
- Gb: High protection level for Zone 1/2.
This marking ensures the fixture meets stringent safety requirements for hazardous areas, combining flameproof design, gas compatibility, temperature control, and reliability.
