I. General

Depending on the requirements and flexibility of use, different places may require the use of mobile explosion proof lamps, portable explosion proof lamps or personal equipment. Requirements for higher EPL level of the area should not be used with lower EPL level of equipment, except for equipment with other protective measures. In practice, however, such a restriction may be difficult to enforce – especially for portable equipment.

It is therefore recommended that all equipment complies with the requirements of the area requiring the highest EPL level. Similarly, it is desirable that the equipment category and temperature group be appropriate for all gases, vapors and dusts likely to be encountered where the equipment is used. Backup batteries should not be taken into hazardous locations unless proper precautions are taken.

II. mobile and portable equipment (gases)

Unlike permanently installed equipment, mobile or portable equipment is used only temporarily in hazardous locations. This type of equipment may include, for example: emergency generators, welding machines, industrial lifting vehicles (forklifts), air compressors, electric fans or blowers, portable power tools, certain testing equipment. Equipment that may enter or be brought into a hazardous location should have an appropriate level of equipment protection.

If mobile or portable equipment used in a hazardous location does not meet the routinely required EPL level, a documented hazard management procedure shall be implemented. The procedure shall include appropriate training, procedures and controls. The EPL issued shall be appropriate to the potential ignition hazard posed by the use of the equipment.

If plug sockets are present in the hazardous location, the EPL level required for the hazardous location shall be achieved. Alternatively, they shall only be energized or connected in accordance with the SOP.

III. personal equipment (gases)

Sometimes personnel inadvertently bring battery or solar powered personal equipment into hazardous locations.

Ordinary electronic watches are typical low voltage electronic devices that have been independently rated for use in hazardous locations based on past requirements and current EPL requirements.

All other battery- or solar-powered personal equipment (including electronic watches with calculators) shall meet one of the following conditions:

a) Comply with the requirements of a recognized explosion proof type appropriate to the EPL and the gas category and temperature group requirements;

b) Undertake a hazard rating;

c) Be taken into a hazardous location in accordance with safe manufacturing procedures.

Note: Personal electronic equipment with lithium batteries as a power source will increase the risk, it is appropriate to assess in accordance with the provisions of this article.

VI, the dust environment special requirements

Ordinary industrial portable equipment can not be used in hazardous locations, except for specific locations that have been evaluated to ensure that the use of potentially combustible dust (“dust-free” conditions) will not occur. If plugs and sockets are used in hazardous locations, they should be suitable for specific areas and should be mechanically and/or electrically interlocked to prevent an ignition source from being created during insertion or removal of the plug. Alternatively, they should only be energized in “dust-free” conditions.
